January 6 to 15

Australia’s only Academy accredited and BAFTA recognised short film festival, screening the hottest, cutting edge shorts from across the galaxy. The main Flickerfest program takes place each January in Sydney, followed by a National Tour, kicking off in Banglow each Australia Day long weekend, or thereabouts.


January 21

Screening in conjunction with Flickerfest, the Byron All Shorts short film competition showcases the work of local Northern Rivers filmmakers.

March 2 to 11

Showcasing local, national and international films from a multitude of genres, including feature, documentary, surf films, shorts, animation and experimental, now in its fifth year.


April 28

The Northern Rivers’ annual Youth Week festival, featuring a medley of workshops, live bands, competitions and activities, held at Riverside Park, Evans Head.


April 5 to 9

The country’s largest international blues and roots music festival, and recently announced as the 2010 Australian Event of the Year. Headline acts for Bluesfest 2012 include Cold Chisel, Roger Daltrey, Crosby Stills and Nash, Richard Clapton, John Butler Trio, The Pogues, The Specials and more. All appearing over Easter long weekend, at Tyagarah Tea Tree Farm, a few kilometres north of Byron Bay.

April 6 to 7

An annual gathering of pipers, drummers, dancers, sports men and women for a celebration of Scottish cultural tradition. Held every Easter long weekend at Maclean showground. Now in its 107th year.


May 19 to 29

Thousands of people flock to the town of Casino for its annual Beef Week celebrations, with the highlight being the main Saturday when streets are closed and filled with food stalls, entertainment stages, street entertainers, art and craft exhibitions and more. The grand parade of colourful floats takes pride of place in the afternoon, followed by the rodeo at the nearby showground, supported by live music and great atmosphere throughout.


June 23

Thousands of people line the streets of Lismore for this annual winter solstice celebration, watching as dusk falls on the longest night of the year, and lanterneers and performers create a dream-scape of illuminated sculptures. During the day there are street stalls and music and the evening ends with a spectacular outdoor theatre display.

Australia’s longest running travelling film festival is a showcase of Australian and international features, documentaries and short films, held annually at Dendy Byron Bay Cinemas.

This annual fundraiser for the Westpac Helicopter features an optional silver service luncheon or informal picnic, followed by an afternoon of music by upcoming young opera stars. Held in the natural amphitheatre at The Channon’s Coronation Park.

One of the country’s most popular youth culture and music festivals, held over three days in July .


August 3 to 5 (workshops from July 30)

Three days and nights of writings, readings, presentations, lunches, dinners and discussions, featuring a stellar cast of Australian writers and international guests. A workshop program runs the week prior to the Festival, from August 1 to 5, and there are also special days for primary and secondary school children and teachers.


August 4 to 5

A weekend full of performance poetry with heats and semi finals hosted by Nimbin’s local cafes, culminating in the final showdown on Sunday night.


August 16 to 19

Showcasing a vibrant cross-section of musical styles, this annual classical music festival features professional chamber ensembles, emerging young artists, Australian composers and world-class soloists.


August 17 to 25

This week-long annual festival hosts various events around Murwillumbah including a street parade, masked ball, and family fun day.


October 20

A fun celebration for all the family, exploring all things related to fine food, surfing, culture and the arts.


September 7 to 9

Three days of stunning classical music in the small village of Tyalgum, in the north of Tweed shire.

Inspired by the incredible talent of Australian musicians and lack of reggae orientated festivals in Australia, Reggaefest is a weekend filled with music, food, culture, community & family in a beautiful location. Reggaefest is a festival by the people, for the people.


September 29 to October 1

Ballina will ‘come alive’ over the October long weekend with a ‘Country Carnivale’ style Festival that provides entertainment and activities for all ages.


October 18 to 20

Enjoy the best of regular country show attractions alongside a host of events showcasing the region’s vibrant creative culture.


October 20

A family focused festival celebrating the diversity of the Tweed region, featuring music, dance, food and costume.


October 27 to November 4

Held annually from the last weekend in October to the first weekend in November, the Jacaranda Festival celebrates the spectacle of the hundreds of lilac-blossomed trees that grow in Grafton’s broad tree lined avenues.

Four days and nights of eclectic music performances, from folk to indie, acoustic and rock, presented in indoor venues throughout the town of Mullumbimby, supported by great street entertainment, fabulous food and vibes. This relatively new festival, now in its fourth year, is fast proving to be a favourite amongst locals, for its hard hitting program of national and international performers.

A community celebration of life in Uki.


December 29 to 30

A screen culture event celebrating the innovation of international queer filmmaking culture, welcoming innovative, entertaining, intelligent and celebratory films of all lengths from queer filmmakers and films with queer themes; from short films, to selected features.


December 31 to January 1

The Tropical Fruits New Year’s Festival is a queer celebration featuring an art exhibition, performance artists, DJs, the Queer Fruits film festival and recovery pool party. The New Years Eve party is held at the Lismore Showground, with other events at various locations in Lismore.
