Arts Northern Rivers receive funding to deliver Auslan Creative

Arts Northern Rivers has received funding to deliver a multi-arts project Auslan Creative, thanks to the Australian Government’s Regional Arts Fund. Working with the Northern Rivers Deaf community and multi-artform partners, the project will deliver a creative development program aimed at exploring models for collaboration and practice development between artists of mixed abilities.

Auslan Creative joins the list of 71 projects supported through the latest $1.1 million funding round which range from traditional art forms such as weaving and fine arts, through to dance, literature, film and digital media.

“Arts Northern Rivers is thrilled with this funding outcome and looking forward to delivering an innovative skills and professional development opportunity for the Deaf and non-Deaf communities in the Northern Rivers. The project will feature creative collaborations with significant arts and cultural partners as well as the wider Deaf community in the Northern Rivers region  – who will all contribute to the success of this important project ” said Peter Wood, Executive Director for Arts Northern Rivers.

The project responds to an approach made by Lismore-based Deaf arts worker Sigrid MacDonald, who identified a gap in creative opportunities for the Deaf community in our region. By bringing together the deaf community and creative partners in workshop-based creative development opportunities, Auslan Creative will engage both Deaf and non-Deaf participants through music, visual arts, performing arts and screen. Creative partners for delivery of the project will include NORPA, featuring a movement-based program delivered by Deaf Director and Choreographer Anne Seymour, with Lismore Regional Gallery, Northern Rivers Conservatorium and Screenworks also joining the program.

The project will culminate in a large-scale multi-arts event to take place in Lismore in 2021 that will interrogate the outcomes of the creative development program. The event will include creative development participants, creative leaders and emerging leaders for the Deaf community.

This project was made possible by the Australian Government’s Regional Arts Fund, which supports the arts in regional and remote Australia.
