Connect Music Mentorship | Industry Hook Ups for Musos

CONNECT Music Mentorship project was a two-part program developed by Arts Northern Rivers. Part 1 aimed to support and develop the careers of local musos by matching them to leading industry pros and Part 2 offered professional development workshops on the business of music.

In Part 1 Connect: Industry Hook Ups for Musos Arts Northern Rivers received more than 85 applications for the mentorship program. Ten shortlisted applicants were invited to perform at a closed audition at Southern Cross University’s Studio One29 in front of program partners and music industry specialists, who selected the final seven.

The high-profile industry mentors offered invaluable one-on-one support for the artists for the duration of the 2013 program as well as guidance towards a final showcase opportunity, which would see the musos performing at CONNECT Live! in front of industry leaders from around the country.

Project partners Southern Cross University managed the research element of the project that looked closely at the impact of the mentorship model on the career trajectories of the musicians involved.

In 2014 Southern Cross University published these research findings, which showed significant growth across income generation, career development and performance and production activity for all participants.

At the conclusion of the project, participants were already enjoying some great outcomes including increased earnings and more gigs including all seven being invited to perform at the inaugural Falls Music Festival held in Byron Bay over the 2013 New Year period.

In Part 2 of CONNECT: Industry Know How for Musos, Arts Northern Rivers offered regional musicians a unique opportunity to get the lowdown on the business of music.

Presented by music industry specialist Susanna Carman, the series of eight full day sessions, held over four weekends, were designed as a musician’s insider’s guide and included elective sessions delivered by industry professionals from around the country.

Connect was funded by Arts NSW though the Regional Partnerships program and built on a 2011 project managed by Arts Northern Rivers called the Creative Industries Brokers Project.
