Bulan Dalang Galii Naa – Artist Camp

BULAAN DALANG GALII NAA

GAN NGAA LEEN DUU

In 2023 and 2024, Arts Northern Rivers supported the Returning Indigenous Corporation to deliver a four-day immersive, on-country art residency program for First Nations creatives living and working on Bundjalung Country. Bulaan Dalang Galii Naa is focused on supporting emerging creative practitioners, providing opportunities to connect, explore different artforms and mediums, and enhance skills in arts business.

The pilot program supported 13 emerging creatives: Bindimu, Sonya Breckenridge, Kylie Caldwell, Kristina Davis, Janelle Duncan, Tracey Duroux, Kim Healey, Wayne King, Arminel Nagas, Jasmin Stanford, Tim Stanford, Shaun Tucker and Jai Walker. During the residency, participants immersed themselves in storytelling and illustration, copyright and arts law, mural painting, and clay workshops with renowned artists Otis Carey, Bronwyn Bancroft, and Penny Evans.

The program continued for 12 months with ongoing mentorship and opportunities to deepen participants’ experience in mural painting and fashion design, as well as two collective exhibitions. In July 2024, the inaugural cohort held their first group show on Arakwal Country at Lone Goat Gallery, Byron Bay. Titled ‘Longstanding’ and curated by Dr Bronwyn Bancroft with Kylie Caldwell, the exhibition showcased works created throughout the residency by the artists. The opening on July 5 brought over 200 people to the Gallery to connect and celebrate the achievements of the cohort. We look forward to seeing new works from these artists in their final program milestone, their collective show 'The Dreaming is Now' on Widjabul Wiabul Country at Amarina AARI this November 2024.
